Deteriorating is a self-portrait of the Artist privately logging his personal experiences of mass incarceration in an environment where expression of emotions could cause one punishment, pain or extended loss of liberty. This portrait depicts Mr. Wash silently being broken into pieces by prison politics, being racially demeaned, and disrespected by the destruction of his works of art by those inside and outside the prison. It expressed the emotional trauma locked deep within from the physical destruction of his paintings, “HOME Soil”, featuring former President George Bush, which was vandalized because of other’s hatred of the war; and “FIRST LADY”, featuring an easel inside of her head; Michelle and Barack Obama was punctured and defaced because of contempt for having a black president.
